IC INFO
Name: Camille "Cammi" Benally
Canon/Continuity: Marvel 616
Reference: This wikipedia article is shit. Marvel's fanwiki isn't much better. I wrote my own (better) thing in a psuedo-application.
Canon Point: Post-Annihilation
Personality:
- Completely normal 11-year-old girl. absolutely nothing special.
- Not so accidentally got pulled into a whole bunch of shit with Drax the Detroyer in Alaska (Last Frontier more like last FUNTIER amirite?).
- Played tag-along for an entire intergalactic war and somehow managed not to die by the grace of having Drax be responsible for her or other people be responsible for her b/c Drax would disembowel them if she died.
- Absentee dad and alcoholic, neglectful, abusive mom made for a not-so-fun childhood full of bitterness and microwave meals
- literally incapable of giving a shit about whether or not something will get her killed because who cares if it means she gets to see a cool thing
- so bored with life that she willingly took the plunge into a bunch of aliens fighting each other because it was cool and she desperately needed something in her life that wasn't total worthless garbage
- would really just like to be happy for once in her life
- thinks being involved in an alien war shitshow is an improvement over being stuck in alaska (tru tbh)
- unable to be cowed by even the baddest of asses, secure in her knowledge that most people won't murder someone who is obviously not worth the time or energy
- somehow her lack of fucks to give has allowed her to snark in the face of people who would have totally killed anyone else without giving a damn
- is hella sarcastic and flat-humored and blunt as hell; once described as "says what other people usually just think"
- not big on touchy-feely moments
- has a serious streak of manipulation and maliciousness in her if she can goad someone into doing something interesting
- is capable of being nice until being nice gets boring
- the nova corps dossier literally has her down for "burgeoning sociopathic tendencies" but they're just bitter b/c they can't arrest Drax anymore. also they don't exist anymore at her canon point SUCK IT LAWMAN
- can read people pretty well b/c that's how you survive in a cold and empty world (See: Alaska)
- once asked if she could keep Moondragon's ear as a souvenir because nothing says I've been to space like the ear of a superhuman
- connected to Drax in some vague way that makes her feel Off to anyone from Earth and makes them give a shit about each other b/c otherwise how would you swing that
- has probably seen a moose at some point

Character Info
Name: Camille "Cammi" Benally (Avengers Arena has her name down in the S.W.O.R.D. Database as Camille Benally, but Avengers Arena and the follow up, Avengers Undercover, also didn't pay attention to a fair amount of her backstory. Also, she's never addressed as Camille by the comic she was introduced in, so make of that what you will.)
Series: Marvel 616 Universe
Canon Point: In-Annihilation; After Nova, Peter Quill and Phyla ditch her and leave her in Gamora's care.
Age: 11 (She starts the series at the age of 10, but mentions that she will be 11 next month when asked about her age. Considering the Annihilation war lasted more than a month, she's 11 by now.)
Appearance: Here.
Cammi wears a red hat with a black broken heart on it, and a large dark olive parka over whatever t-shirt she happens to have on at the time, along with a plaid skirt, a pair of black leggings, and a large pair of black heavy-duty boots. Her skin is fairly pale, and her hair is brown and straight.
In her current canon point, she's also wearing a space suit, which is pictured here on herself and Peter Quill.

Trigger Warning: Mentions of Self-harm

History:
Cammi's history before Annihilation is fairly vague, mostly given to us by people who are decidedly not her, or by the narrative itself. Before she became the universe's most sardonic tag-a-long in space, Cammie was a normal 10-year-old girl living in a small town in Alaska called Coot's Bluff. By her account it was a completely dead end and boring place to live, and while she didn't hate it and rage against it, she was decidedly discontent with her lot in life. There wasn't a reason not to be, considering her mother was a drunk and her father was nowhere to be found. It is implied by a picture she has in her room that it wasn't always like this, but whatever happened (though considering the fact that her mother calls her a tramp just like her father, it can be guessed that her father cheated on her mother and abandoned them) essentially ruined her family and might have made her the way she is today: jaded and nonchalant enough about life that the Nova Corps has her down in their files as someone who has burgeoning sociopathic tendencies.

She went to school and got other kids in trouble, looked out for her only friend Dex (mostly because he was her only friend). Every day afterward, she would go home to her probably drunk mother, microwave herself some dinner, and sit down and watch T.V. By all accounts, pretty dull way a to live. By the time the time she's introduced in Drax's miniseries, she's generally succumbed to a fairly bitter existence riddled with sarcasm and a desire for anything interesting to happen.

Her life starts getting interesting right around the time a prison ship carrying Drax the Destroyer, Lunatik, Pai'bok and the Blood Brothers, crashes on the outskirts of her town. She wastes no time investigating the scene and is generally overlooked by all the aliens as someone who Does Not Matter because she's a child. She watches the Blood Brothers fight Drax for a bit, and when they're lead away and convinced not to waste their time to fight Drax, convinces Drax (who is in a bit of a confused mental state, for lack of a better word) to fight the Blood Brothers by lying and saying she's his daughter and they hurt her.

The Blood Brothers, with the help of Paibok, kill him. Cammi watches this happen and then asks Paibok if she can have Drax, or at least his corpse. She has no reason for wanting him other than the fact that he's the most interesting thing that's ever happened in her life. Her choice pays off when he essentially respawns out of his own body, smaller but still as lethal as ever. He does some weird mind-melding shit with Cammi, causing her to know some things that he knows and vice versa, mostly so that he can get a bead on the situation.

In the end, she helps Drax find some new clothes and some knives and when he proceeds to ditch her, by telling her to stay put. Lacking anything better to do, but more than likely because she knows Paibok is at the school and that they'll fight eventually, her and Dex go back there and she ends up in the principals offfice, talking with Paibok about how Drax has come back to life. Despite how difficult she is to deal with, Paibok doesn't kill her but drags her with him when he goes to face Drax.

This is when it's revealed that whatever bond Drax and Cammi have now has essentially tainted her and made it so that other natives of Earth will shun her without knowing why. After telling them this, Paibok gets out of being horribly murdered by Drax by using a distress beacon to call the authorities to his position and turn himself in. Cammi goes with them, as she is technically an accomplice, but Drax and her get off scott free since his DNA doesn't match what's in the system. It's at this point that the Annihilation Wave decides to attack the place they're at and they're forced to run.

The war for Cammi is mostly meeting new people and not really caring about the reputations they supposedly have, nearly getting killed a couple of times, and contributing in no real way whatsoever other than keeping Drax company. It's easy to overlook Cammi's role in the Annihilation War simply because she doesn't really have one. It's unknown how she even managed to live through it, considering that she was on what was essentially a hopeless battlefield. For the most part, Drax and a few others essentially made sure she didn't die, primarily because as much as he didn't and doesn't want to admit it, Drax cares for her. At one point, he stays on a planet and fights back an army just so she has time to escape. Likewise, she attempt to go and find him after he abandons her to kill Thanos, only to be thwarted by the fact that there are people other than Drax who are not so willing to bring a child to a huge battle.

By the end of the Annihilation War, it's unknown where exactly she is, only that she was left somewhere that was thought of as safe, and that she's in the company of Skreet.

This is a pretty comprehensive telling of her role in Annihilation for those who want more detail.

Personality:
Cammi is a lot like any other bored teenager, with the exception that she's only eleven and not, say, fifteen. She's tired of her life in her tiny town, and as a result, she's starved for anything that's remotely interesting. This could be anything from a flesh eating virus to an alien landing, but if it happens in Cammi's vicinity, she's likely to go check it out not matter what. While she wouldn't put herself directly in an obvious line of fire, the events of Annihilation show that she's not entirely sure where the line of fire is half the time. All she tends to see is that there is something interesting happening and she wants to watch it go down.

Due to her desire to watch interesting things, Cammi has a streak of maliciousness in her when it comes to perpetuating them. She sees no problem in convincing a mentally befuddled Drax that she is his daughter if it means getting him to continue fighting so that she can watch. She even seems happy that the fight is continuing, not at all guilty for her part in manipulating it. When Drax recieves the ear of his daughter as a warning, she asks if she can keep it. Whenever there is a pause in the battles against the Annihilation Wave, she loudly proclaims her boredom over not being able to watch Drax destroy things. Her ability to feel remorse isn't lacking so much as it is a sort of thing she ignores in favor of other things, consistently distracting herself with the interesting is more important than dwelling on her failings as a person. This is because, as far as Cammi is concerned, there are a lot.

It's easy for the Nova Corps to consider her for sociopathic tendencies due to this, but Cammi doesn't really exhibit any concrete traits. She's callous and rough with people, and even claims that the only reason that she exhibits nicety for the most part is as long as it's an interesting thing to do, at one point telling Richard Rider that she found his backstory boring and was only being nice until it stopped being interesting. While she doesn't appear to really give a shit about a lot of things, going through most of life just coasting along, there are some people she cares for. However, her role models for 'How to Care About People' have been her alcoholic mother and her not-there father, so the idea that she has no idea how to express her concern for other people makes sense. She's terrible at dealing with the emotions of others, to the point where they tend to surprise her when they come out. She knows basic things, like when she is supposed to be concerned and sad, and she realizes that when people die or when something goes to shit, it sucks. She just has trouble relating it to herself and why she should feel bad and what she's supposed to do about other people's feelings.

Still, she does care, even if she won't show her emotions in a notable way. For the most part, she makes sure her friend Dex doesn't get bullied constantly and while her attempts to encourage him to stand up for himself are very rough, that she bothers at all shows that she considers him worth her time. Her ability to attach herself is notably present in the way she is with Drax. They annoy each other and Drax is constantly trying to get rid of her, but ultimately, he cares about her safety and well-being for reasons he's probably not entirely aware of. Cammi is the same, and her attachment to Drax shows in how unwilling she is to be separated from him even if it means she'd likely die staying with him, going so far as to tag along on a high risk mission just for the chance to catch up with him again.

However, while she does have the capacity to care for people, it only extends so far. Cammi has never feen shown having much of a reaction to the death that surrounds her in the events of Annihilation. It's likely that the reason she doesn't crumble under the horrors of war around her is because she doesn't really know the people who are dying. Cammi can react to terrible things happening when it's someone she particularly gives a damn about, but otherwise, her capacity to care is limited. The people she knows are the ones she cares about, everyone else is just a stranger.

While she never discusses them openly, it's clear that Cammi has a lot of issues with herself. When Dex implies that she is anything other than boring, she dismisses his claim with "shows what you know". Part of Cammi's desire for the interesting is so that she can be interesting by proxy of being around something notable. Chances are, because her parents never really treated her like anything of importance, Cammi has a desire for someone to see her as something or someone important, regardless of whether she is or not. While her self-esteem isn't as low as it used to be--it's implied that she engaged in self-harm for a time before quitting, most likely because she saw it as pointless and no one was stopping her from doing it--Cammi still has trouble seeing herself as a worthwhile individual.

Her low self-worth is actually a boon to her in some situations, given her desire to chase after weird and potentially fatal things. She doesn't show a lot of fear, because fear is for people who actually care about dying, and only people who care about themselves enough to not want to stop are the sort of people who care about whether or not a situation could kill them. Cammi doesn't really care about either of those things, so she's able to chase things that other people might think twice about. It's only so good in as far as she's the one throwing herself in said dangerous situations, and she tends to react as one usually would if the potentially deadly situation comes as a surprise.

At her root, Cammi is also an excellent survivor due to her surprising amount of perceptiveness despite being a child. While she isn't good with handling emotions, she can read people fairly well. She knows when she can push and when she needs to pull back, and it's probably thanks to her less than ideal situation at home that she knows things like this. She's able to figure out that Drax can no longer to energy manipulation just from an off-hand comic, and while he isn't the most complex of characters when it comes to his ultimate motivation (he has been trying to kill Thanos since his creation in 1973), she is easily able to tell that he cares more about killing Thanos than he does about actually fighting the Annihilation Wave. She's also able to keep herself afloat when everything is going to hell in her town by knowing just how far she can go with Paibok without him killing her.

Cammi is described as a girl who "says what other people normally just think". She has a filter, but actively chooses not to use it, preferring to hammer her way through conversation and willingly points out any observations she makes. This can be anything ranging from guessing with startling accuracy the reason that someone is doing something, to just pointing out how stupid a costume is. The subject doesn't seem to matter much either, as she does ask for the dismembered ear of Moondragon that Thanos sends to Drax to inform him that he has his daughter. She knows that it's a painful subject for the people involved, but to her, it's just another piece of memorabilia to be interested in. It doesn't even matter if the person she's talking to is the sort that is likely to kill her either. There's not much that can keep Cammi from speaking her mind, and the reason she gets away with it to a point is because she's a child, and she knows it.

At the end of the Drax Miniseries, Cammi leaves behind a note written in alien blood that reads 'I'm going to be happy'. Ultimately, it's a completely true not because that is what Cammi wants most. To be happy. She's aware of her failings as a person and while she works to fix certain things about herself(like quitting her self-harm tendencies), it's obvious that she was certain she was going to be miserable so long as she stayed in Coot's Bluff, and that is one of the reasons she worked so hard to leave it. She doesn't see herself as the source of her own misery so much as her surroundings, and when she has an opportunity to change them, she does. For the most part, she's right, because once she starts her impromptu space adventure, Cammi seems a little less depressed about her surroundings. Maybe it's because she's too busy trying not to die in a war, but maybe it's because she's just a little less miserable.

Powers/Abilities:

Cammi has absolutely no abilities that could be considered supernatural or super human. The only thing remotely close to an ability that she has, confirmed by Paibok's suggestion and Drax's lack of denial, is something that makes her read as distinctly Other to anyone on Earth, which would cause them to shun her without knowing why. As this would be difficult to work around for character interactions, I've decided that it only applies to unpowered humans from Marvel's 616 Earth. Even then, it's less of a need to shun her and more of a distinct feeling of discomfort around her. Considering her atypical traits for a child, it wouldn't be difficult for someone to wave off as just being unnerved by her attitude. Other than that, she is a normal 11-year-old girl.
